Even before the first NFL game is played, many avid fans begin the preparation for their fantasy football seasons. Fantasy football is an online competition where the participants can start leagues and create a team by drafting real players. Based on the player in real life, they earn a certain number of points online. The point of fantasy football is to win the league by drafting the best players so they can earn the most points. Yet, many players do not live up to their draft-day hype, and underperform throughout the season, causing the participants to get fewer points. Here are the three biggest ‘busts’ of the 2024-2025 fantasy football season.
1. CJ Stroud, QB for the Houston Texans
CJ Stroud’s main appeal was his inventory of some of the best wide receivers in the league, such as Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, and Tank Dell. Many fans believed that with such strong weapons, he would put up crazy numbers- while this could have been true, all 3 of his main wide receivers got injured, with 2 of them suffering season-ending injuries early on. CJ Stroud’s average draft position (ADP) was 53.4 as the No. 5 quarterback off the board in most leagues. Yet, he finished the season as QB18. While CJ Stroud’s underperformance can not rightly be blamed on him, he ended up a bust nonetheless.
2. Christian McCaffrey, RB for the San Francisco 49ers
After Christian McCaffrey’s monstrous performance in the 2023-2024 season, fans had extremely high expectations for him, as shown in his average draft position of 1.01. Disaster struck during training camp, with him suffering from Achilles Tendonitis, eliminating him until Week 10. He then made his season debut, and he got injured again with a PCL sprain only 4 weeks later, ending his season. He winded up finishing as the RB68 and is now titled as possibly the biggest bust of the season.
3. Marvin Harrison Jr., WR for the Arizona Cardinals
As the son of the legendary Marvin Harrison Sr., fans had great expectations for Marvin Harrison Jr. Despite being a rookie, who are rarely drafted in the first few rounds due to their unpredictability, his average draft position was 13.6. He ended the season as WR 33. While many see him as a fantasy bust, he actually did put up great stats on the field for a rookie, surpassing 800 catching yards and eight touchdowns. He didn’t even underperform, but fans were far too ambitious, drafting a rookie so early on.
Fantasy football is always unpredictable, hence the appeal, and even the most promising players can underperform due to lack of help, injuries, or overambitious draft selections. The 2024-2025 Fantasy Season was a blast for most besides those who lost their seasons due to having these players. We do not know what the future has in store for us, and perhaps these busts can redeem themselves.
